Help Alphanaut Complete New Album For Canine Cancer Charity

Alphanaut is raising funds on Kickstarter.com to help raise funds for the followup album to "Out of Orbit".

The new album titled "Little Sun" is a collection of songs inspired by the life of my dog Dingo. Unfortunately, we lost Dingo at the age of six after he fought a valiant battle with canine lymphoma. Dingo was truly an amazing creature who entered our universe for too short a time, touching all around him in ways I never thought possible. He was a daredevil, lover of life, pals with every human he met, best friend and star of the neighborhood. He taught us all a great deal, and when he was gone, he was greatly missed by all who had met him. The songs are are fictionalized accounts of key points in Dingo's life forming a concept album of sorts.

My goal with my campaign on Kickstarter.com is to raise $5,000.00 to pay for a small orchestral section to play on the album, as well as hire the other remaining musicians needed to complete the project. With Kickstarter and your help I can make that goal a reality. Check out my campaign, donate and receive cool pledge gifts as a way of me saying thanks for your support. I have 30 days from today to pull off my goal, and unfortunately if I don't reach my set amount the project won't get funded.

Once the album is completed my goal is to donate a portion of the proceeds from album sales to a charitable organization working on the issue of canine cancer. I'm still doing research as to who I want to reach out to to achieve this goal, but hope to make that announcement once the project is ready to be released.

During the filming of "The Innocence of Time" music video, I was fortunate to have my family with me on location. Actually, my nephew Austyn was down to star in the first half of the production as the lone astronaut stranded on some strange world. My mom, a shutter-bug herself, captured tons of great still photos from behind the scenes, while my sister Stephanie shot video footage.

Just posted two more photo galleries to the Alphanaut Ning Site of what they captured during the filming. The first is from our final day in the desert near Joshua Tree National Park. The second is from our day in downtown Los Angeles.

Alphanaut "The Innocence of Time" Part 2

Here is the video for the second segment of Behind the Scenes footage we filmed while making the music video for "The Innocence of Time".

In part 2, the scenes were shot in downtown Los Angeles. We utilized a number of locations that day including the Second Street tunnel, rail yard, Bonaventure Hotel and Million Dollar Hotel.

Nils Timm was at the helm with his regular crew including Rob Toth and Kanna Taniuchi with Mark's sister and mother on board capturing the behind the scenes happenings.

Alphanaut Ning Community Now Live

Yesterday marked the official launch of the Alphanaut Community Site at Ning.com I've been working on this environment off and on for the last six months, and finally have it to a point where I feel comfortable letting fans and friends know about it. For the first 100 people to join in and set up their free profile, I'm offering a complimentary CD quality song download through Bandcamp.

If you're not familiar with Ning, they offer a really cool community space that can be used by anyone, for pretty much any purpose. I'm hoping it will provide me with a more centralized space where I can communicate with everyone about the latest happenings with the project. "Happily Sedated" - The World Is Unwinding

So it's been a while since my last post featuring the inspiration behind the songs on "Out of Orbit". I've unexpectedly found myself swept up by a creative 'tidal wave' the last 6 months, which has kept me away from doing as much social networking as I would like. However, as a result of all my efforts, I have not only penned 13 songs which will be the next Alphanaut full length, but I've also begun a collection of ambient instrumentals. If all goes as planned the instrumental album will be released Spring 2011 and the full length in summer the same year. I'll keep everyone posted on how things are coming along.

The next tune up from "Out of Orbit" is "Happily Sedated". This was the only song on the album that went to the studio without a finished demo at the beginning of the recording session. I don't think I even had a lyric beyond "We're all happily sedated, in the life that we created". That's it, and the pressure was on to figure out what the message would be around that line.

At the time the songs were being recorded, the world was in free fall as economies were collapsing and our communal spirit began to deflate. One day I was out around town and took notice of how many people were shielded from the outside world by their hand held devices. One after another I noticed individuals paying more attention to the texts they were sending rather than where they were walking. That was enough to trigger the lyric "Look up, power down your cel phone" and I found myself with inspiration for the son's direction.

I wrote the song about a how each and every one of us is culpable for the woes of our current situation, and how blame can't simply be tossed at bankers and politicians. I began to realize that four decades of institutionalized excess of the Western world had drug us down and taken the rest of the world with it.

The song's message is hidden behind a catchy little tune that wound up developing rather organically in the studio.

"The Innocence of Time" Music Video by Alphanaut

I just posted the latest Alphanaut music video for the song "The Innocence of Time". The tune itself is actually from "The Lunar Age" EP and was officially released as a single this time last year, however at the time I was ramping up to record "Out of Orbit" and had to dedicate my funds to the full length. I knew the video was going to have to wait, but the timing worked out perfectly as I was able to work with Nils Timm once again. Nils directed the video for "Spontaneity" and I was happy to coordinate time with him, and his busy schedule, to work on ideas for visuals for the song.

After presenting my initial concepts for the music video, we fine tuned a story line that would work within my budget, which again was next to nothing. Nils is fantastic and bringing together a crew that are passionate about film making and can create top notch visuals for a shoestring. As an example, the space suit we rented for $150, but we couldn't afford the backpack unit that came with it. So Kanna, the wardrobe girl, grabbed some cardboard boxes, covered them with white nylon, attached a few found objects that looked like controls, creating her own version of the life support unit. Brilliant!

I have some behind-the-scenes footage that I will be revealing in a few weeks and will go over a few additional bits of trivia from the shoot. Don't want to go over them now as I don't want to ruin any surprises before people watch the clip.

"Without You" - A Tribute To Love Left Behind

The song "Without You" was by far my most ambitious piece on the "Out of Orbit" album. I had actually written the melody back in 2006, a good year before I started seriously rolling up my sleeves to compose again. I knew this song wasn't going to be an appropriate fit for "The Lunar Age" EP, so I decided to hold it for my envisioned full length, which would have a much broader sound. I knew I wanted "Without You" to feel epic, complete with live piano, drums, percussion and strings. I got my wish on all that, with the exception of my desire for a live string section. My budget just didn't allow it this time around, but I was lucky enough to work with Benny Brydern on fully flushing out my string arrangements with synths.

For the longest time the piece floated around as an instrumental and I tried a number of lyrical ideas. Then one day I ran across an old demo with the song "Without You", which was set to an entirely different melody. I tried singing the words to my instrumental and it was a perfect fit.

The concept behind the lyric was to tell a story of someone who had passed away, moving on to the spirit world, yet unable to get over the love they left behind on Earth. I chose to reference heaven, even though I don't subscribe to any particular concept of the after life, because I felt it would be the easiest reference for most people to understand. Ironically, during my vocal sessions, I had experienced my own loss of someone close to me, so I channeled that emotion into my voice. I think the delivery on this song is pretty raw and intense, and I'm very happy with the result, though this is one I can't listen to quite yet because of the emotion that motivated my vocal parts.

"Stalker" Video Clip by Russian Film Maker Andrei Tarkovsky

Here's footage from a 1979 movie called "Stalker" by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky

I watched this movie a couple months ago, and though I was really struck by it's visual style, I can't entirely recommend you sit down and give it a viewing. That is unless you like really long winded story telling. There are a lot of great moments in the film and ultimately it's a really great idea. Just found this clip on Youtube where a German band named Heimataerde used clips from the film for their music video. It actually provides a good example of scenes from the film.

"Mystery Loves Company" - By Alphanaut

Track number six on "Out of Orbit" titled "Mystery Loves Company" is another that goes further back in my song writing catalog. Bringing this one into the Alphanaut universe was probably the most difficult and the song went through about half a dozen different personalities before I settled on this arrangement. As a matter of fact, just before the final mix of the song I ripped out the original drum track that Jorge laid down and programmed the current beats.

Lyrically, it's a tune I wrote after a heated debate with someone who had zealot-like religious beliefs and essentially doomed me to hell for not having the same convictions. Looking back on it from a more mature perspective, I'm not sure I got my point across as effectively as I could have, though there are elements of the lyric I still really like.

Low Budget Sci Fi Short by Ataque de Pánico! "Panic Attack!"

Many out there have probably already seen this trailer, but for those who haven't it's a short film by Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez, called "Ataque de panico!" (Panic Attack). It's a story in which giant robots invade a South American city. The kicker is, it was reportedly made for $500, though some dispute that fact. Either way, it was certainly done on a shoe string budget and it's pretty exciting to see what can be done when imagination and ingenuity make up for money.

Last I read about this project, Sam Raimi that his Ghost House Pictures made a deal with Alvarez to direct a feature length movie based on the short.

"This Time" - The Complexities of Truth and Lies in Love

The song "This Time" is another that goes back away for me. It was originally recorded as part of a demo for my previous band to an entirely different melody. The lyric always meant a lot to me, and as I didn't have the rights to the original melody, I decided to put it to my own music.

As I am at heart a minimalist (I know it's not apparent at this point), I had been experimenting with the idea of creating a song that would revolve around one melodic theme throughout. The idea was to have the song build upon itself without moving off a constant progression, and from that idea the music behind "This Time" formed. Originally this music backed a very different version of "The Best Hasn't Happened Yet" from "The Lunar Age" EP, which was scrapped when it quickly became apparent it was the wrong direction for that song. I then began to fit the "This Time" lyric into the instrumental and it worked perfectly.

This was the second song, after "More Than I Do", that I gave to Chavo Villanueva to play guitar on back when I was working on the previous EP. Even though this song was pretty much flushed out before the EP sessions even started, it was sonically more expansive and I knew it had to be held back. In the end, it actually laid the ground work for how the sound for "Out of Orbit" would develop.

"This Time" was written while in a particularly turbulent relationship years ago. It's a pretty straight forward confession about lies told and received chipping away at the foundation of love. Oh, so many mistakes.

"Sleep Spun Brown" - New Alphanaut 'B Side' for "Satellites Crashing" Single

Just wrapped our final rehearsal for a new Alphanaut tune titled "Sleep Spun Brown" which will be a bonus cut for the forthcoming single "Satellites Crashing".

The song actually is a piece I originally co-wrote with Cobban Barnett, my good friend and former keyboard player in my band November. We had gotten together at his place in Chicago with the intention of writing as much material as possible for a new project and this piece came into existence in less than 8 hours. Unfortunately due to a family tragedy that occurred the next day, I had to depart and we were never able to return to the project. The interpretation you hear for Alphanaut is much different than the original which I plan on posting once the single is released.

Joining me in studio are Ted Scarlett on keys, Chavo Villanueva on guitar, Alberto Campos on drums and Art Agunod on bass. Both Alberto and Art were in November with Cobban and I so this song in a round about way represents a virtual reunion of sorts.

The mood of "Sleep Spun Brown" is very different from the songs on "Out of Orbit" and in some ways hints at what's to come for the new songs I'm working on for album number two. I guess if you look at this song in literary terms, the song is more like an appendage in a book, supplementary material that doesn't really relate to the work ahead or behind it.

As an aside, this was the final take of the day and I must have bumped the camera to the right when I pushed record. I'm bobbing in and out on the left there making my typical 'cameo appearance' if you will.

"Never Been To Athens" Honored at the 2010 Los Angeles Cinema Festival

Just recivied word that the Alphanaut video for "Never Been To Athens" has been honored at the Los Angeles Cinema Festival. Both director Jimmy Ahlander and me are thrilled the video received some attention again for our animated tale of a lost spaceman in his flying potato (watch the clip and it will make sense).

This is the second time "Never Been To Athens" has been honored at a film festival. In 2009 the Alphanaut video was one of five selected out of hundreds to compete in the Bornshorts International Film Festival in Denmark including works by Radiohead, Alice in Chains and other big name acts.

My hats off to Jimmy for creating a truly unique visual piece for the song.

New Alphanaut Publicity Photos by William Thoren

Last weekend I had publicity photos taken by my friend William Thoren to tie in with the "Out of Orbit" album art direction. I worked with Will over a year ago to bring to life my ideas for "The Lunar Age" EP, "Spontaneity" and "The Innocence of Time" singles and knew he'd come up with some great images again. Included in this post are a handful of the photos I selected.

The idea was to work inside an abandoned water tower near his house, playing with the natural light beaming through rusted out holes in it's structure. We accented the sun light with a handful of remote strobes and played around with the idea of incorporating blurred motion with parts of my body while keeping others still. What you are seeing was all done in camera with no PhotoShop enhancement. Once again wanted to play around with being barefoot which was a potential hazard as there was glass and debris everywhere.

Alphanaut Top 10 Sci Fi Movie List

Thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite science fiction films, so I'm creating a 'Top 10 List' with a brief description for each one. I'm going to skip over all the obvious blockbuster films "Star Wars", "Alien", "Blade Runner", "Matrix", "Avatar", "Star Trek" (2009 version), etc., and instead touch on those that might be more obscure or easy to overlook.

Here they are starting with number 10 and working up to my all time favorite.

10. "A Boy and His Dog" (1975)
First of all, this is probably not the best film for feminists, and I admit it's recklessly sexist. Also the level of nihilism of this film will probably bother a lot of viewers, though it still remains an intriguing, surprisingly funny and wholly original film. It's centered around a young Don Johnson and his telepathic dog wander a harsh, violent post-apocalyptic world, doing their best to survive.

9. "Primer" (2004)
This is definitely what you'd call 'soft sci fi", and anyone who requires big budget sets and effects in their movies won't find what they are looking for here. Primer is a time travel film shot on a minuscule budget which relies more on it's sharp dialogue, excellent narative and characters to pull off it's story. Really a brilliant piece of film making for the genre.

8. "THX 1138" (1971)
George Lucas' directorial debut is certainly a tough nut to crack and pretty demanding on it's audience. It's story has been appropriated countless times in more recent movies. A futuristic society where love is forbidden and emotions and individuality are controlled through drugs. I've seen it several times over the years and I still struggle with some of it, though Lucas presented some of his most evocative concepts ever on screen with this one.

7. "Dark City" (1998)
When I first saw this film in the theaters I hated it so much that I nearly walked out on it. Before going in it seemed a 'no brainer' to be on my list of faves, but for some reason at that time it didn't click. I saw it ten years later and it was at that point that it's brilliance struck me. The film noir style, amazing sets, meticulous cinematography and bizarre visuals make it a must see for anyone looking for something truly unique.

6. "District 9" (2009)
I know this one isn't particularly obscure, though I had to include it on my list. The characters, apartheid inspired story, visual FX and pseudo-documentary style all add up to an amazing film. Even though I loved Avatar, I'm bummed that this much talked about film got shoved to the side once the behemoth blockbuster came around.

5. "Gattaca" (1997)
A beautifully told tale of a future earth where science and genetics have been allowed to control all aspects of humanity, weeding out what makes us all unique individuals. Some slam the film for it staid direction and acting, but to me it's representative of how people might behave in an entirely pre-programmed environment.

4. "Solaris" (2005)
The Soderbergh remake of the 1972 Russian film seems to evenly divide people. I have friends who, like me, really love it, and others who thought it was a painful snooze fest. To me it's really a beautiful, gently told story that doesn't insult the audience by spoon feeding the plot, holding our hands and pointing out the things not to be missed. I love it when a film maker asks us to use our imaginations and come to our own conclusions.

3. "Moon" (2009)
Another fantastic film from last year that I'm not sure if any one saw. I caught this one on Netflix as it seemed to vanish as quickly as it arrived at the theaters here in Los Angeles. It would be a crime to give much away with this film. You really need to add it to your rental list, sit back and enjoy the unique story.

2. "Donnie Darko" (2001)
Maybe this one really doesn't qualify as full on sci fi, though I really don't know what genre it might fall into. Donnie Darko is mind bending to say the least and often leaves much for the audience to figure out. I recommend seeing the directors cut as it includes extra footage that helps explain this strange universe.
1. "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968)
This one might seem obvious, though many people hate the film I love it. I remember seeing this film as a kid and being fascinated by it from beginning to end. To this day it's still one of my favorite films of all time and I marvel at what Kubrick and his team achieved in 1968.

"Brave New World", "Farenheit 451", "12 Monkeys", "The Iron Giant", "Brazil", "Metropolis", "Cloverfield", "Ghost in the Shell" and dozens more I'm forgetting.

"More Than I Do" - Alphanaut in Quiet Protest

This is where "More than I Do" got it's start some 15 years ago. It was simply a small section of lyric that I jotted down one day, though I was never quite sure what the full story should be to support these lines. I visited the lyric from time to time over the years, searching for the right story to complete what I started but it wasn't until I began tying the words up against an untitled instrumental piece I had written that the song began to take shape.

At first I had discarded the original untitled song as a candidate for the album as it seemed a bit too mainstream stacked up against the other tunes. However after it became the catalyst for the rest of the lyric I knew the song had to make the cut.

Lyrically, I was venting my frustrations with the continuing conflict in Iraq. It was 2007 and we were four years in, with our former administration more obsessed with their own interests than those of the rest of the world. There was continuing issue with the US media being forbidden from showing certain 'controversial' footage on television, and I had just returned from a couple trips abroad in Australia and Turkey. I was shocked to say the least at the contrast in what the media showed in both places compared to ours at home. The blood of innocents, visceral images of destruction, bodies of US soldiers all inspired me to write.

The song starts with a calling out of our former President, moves into commentary about those who are left behind from the destruction of war, then moves to question authority to explain their actions.

I honestly didn't set out to write an anti-war song, though I'm extremely pleased with the results of "More Than I Do". In the end I feel it's more a peaceful protest piece rather than a rallying anthem and it by far my favorite song on the album.

Firtile Song Writing Weekend for Alphanaut

Not much time to blog today. Just wrapped a 12 hour day behind my keyboard and computer. Wrote an intro piece of music for the follow up album to "Out of Orbit", solidified the structure for a few others and wrote 2 new sketches.

This collection of 12 new songs are the most personal I've ever written. Don't want to reveal too much right now but the way it's shaping up there should be lots of surprises in store.

"Never Been To Athens" - Self Reflection and Looking Forward

So the next song on "Out of Orbit" to spy through the magnifying glass is "Never Been To Athens", the first single from the album.

"Never Been To Athens", like "Timid Creature", "Without You", "Mystery Loves Company" and "This Time", had existed in some other form in my back catalog of work before winding up on the album. "Athens" didn't deviate much from what I originally mapped out in my demo, the most radical change being the inclusion of live drums. Funny thing with the drums on that song is their inclusion was never planned on ahead of time.We just wanted to warm up Jorge on something before tackling the first tack and decided to pull up the song. During the rest of the recording process the live drums were crucial in inspiring the bass line on the chorus, electric guitar and organ. I don't think the song would have been the same had Jorge not contributed right up front.

The lyric was written when I was in my mid 20's, and even though it doesn't all relate to where my head is at now, I've always wanted to revive the song. The verses are very self reflective and represent me as a young man trying to break from the shyness that plagued my youth. The choruses are more metaphorical, hinting at the need for security and comfort in love.

As an aside, I find it very strange to see the comments from the public on "Athens" and "Rome" in various blogs and social networks after they listen to the song. People are often dissing both places, writing comments about how I'm not missing much by having not been there. I guess it's easy to assume the creator of the song hadn't visited, but let me lay it out here that when I wrote the song I had indeed been to both cities a couple years prior. Not really sure why the names made it to the lyric. It was just one of those moments, as a writer, when words pour out and you don't question why. Let it be said that I loved both cities, though Athens was one of the smoggiest places I had ever been. So much so my eyes burned most of the time. I understand they've cleaned up the city quite a bit and would love to return.

Rehearsals and New Alphanaut Tunes

Rehearsed a new song yesterday with Alberto Campos, Art Agunod and Ted Scarlett. Alberto and Art are two of my band mates from my previous project "November", and it was great to see them again. I forgot how much I miss working in rehearsals with other musicians, fine tuning a song before heading into the studio. With Alphanaut thus far, I've spent so much fine tuning every detail on my own before passing it off to my backing musicians, but I now want the new material to be a little less intellectually thought out.

The new tune is titled "Sleep Spun Brown" which was written right after my band broke up. This tune will definitely reflect much more of a live vibe compared to the "Out of Orbit" album. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Also, spending today working on tunes for the next full length album. In the process of working on song number eight. Keeping the ideas very sparse and small this time, like a quiet satellite.

"Returner" - Japanese Sci Fi Flick Worth Checking Out

I really dig the film "Returner"! I know it may borrow from numerous other Science Fiction / action movies without shame (Matrix, Terminator and E.T.), but there's something about it that I'm really drawn to. Maybe it's simply because I'm a sucker for Japanese Sci-Fi.

The plot is certainly redundant, though there isn't much that isn't anymore. You've got your typical alien invasion that threatens to annihilate the human race. A young heroine. Time travel. And a reluctant, though highly skilled Tokyo gunman, enlisted to help humanity and prevent the start of the war. All themes that are typically played out in these types of movies, but worth getting into with this film.

What makes "Returner" worth while is a fast-paced story line, good character development, an interesting romance, and a lot of good visual effects. If you generally shy away from subtitled foreign films there is a dubbed version on the DVD as well, though it's pretty badly done. I'm always one for the original audio myself.

"Safe and White" - The Fear of the 'Other'

Getting back to breaking down the songs from "Out of Orbit". Next up is track two titled "Safe and White".

The melody for "Safe and White" came to me early on in the days when I began song writing again, originally revolving around a perky drum 'n bass pattern. I believe it was the second piece I wrote, immediately after I came up with the basic song structure for "Without You". I remember listening to both pieces and thinking "how and I going to fit both onto the same album" as they are so different from one another. The task I gave myself was to view those two songs as if they were opposite ends of a spectrum and the rest of the material I'd write for the album should fall in between.

It would take a year of searching for the right lyric and title for the song, but one day while out at the 'Temple of Consumerism" (the local mall), I was given inspiration. I was hanging at The Grove, an outdoor shopping complex which is popular with tourists visiting Los Angeles, when I briefly overheard conversation of two older white women, dressed as if they were going to church. It was evident from their accent that they were from the midwest and apparently they hadn't gotten out of the house much. Judging from the comments I overheard them making, lets just say they were shocked at how many people were present who didn't share the same skin color as them. Our paths crossed very briefly and I threw them a look of shock at their comments, though I doubt they absorbed my disagreement as they moved through the sea of diversity.

That was all it took to inspire me. I grabbed a cup of coffee, opened my laptop and sat down to begin writing sketches for the lyric.

"The Innocence of Time" Video is Wrapped

After three long days trekking around the Los Angeles area with Nils Timm and his crew, the music video for "The Innocence of Time" is finally finished. Austyn, my nephew who starred in a majority of the video, was a real natural, impressing the crew with his professionalism.

I don't want to give away too many details behind the scenes until we get closer to a release date for the video. However, I will say that judging from the raw clips we reviewed each day, this piece could be an epic event.

This time we'll be working on a video for "The Innocence of Time" which will partly feature a younger version of me played by my nephew Austyn.

"Timid Creature" - Evolution of a Song

So I wanted to publish a little back story for each tune on the "Out of Orbit" album, providing the 'inside scoop' if you will, on song histories, lyrical meaning, inspiration, etc. Figured if anyone out there is wondering what the hell these songs are about, it's best to hear it straight from the source. I'll be going in sequence as the songs appear on the album, so today's post is for "Timid Creature".

"Timid Creature" is possibly the eldest song in the Alphanaut catalog, and it certainly is the case on "Out of Orbit". The only other tune that has the same archival depth is "The Best Hasn't Happened Yet" from "The Lunar Age" EP, which was written around the same time. Don't remember which came first at this point. I wrote "Timid Creature" at the end of a painful breakup. The intensity of it all, amplified by youth, caused me to shield myself for a while. The usual defenses system we all go through for protection after such intense split.

As I was writing new material in late 2007 I figured I'd revisit some of my older works, primarily as an excersize to get the creative juices flowing. However, I was also curious to see if there was anything new to rediscover in these songs. "Timid Creature" is one of the few where I directly lifted an element from the original song and carried it over to build the new adaptation around. In this case the base line.

I was fortunate enough to unearth several old cassettes featuring earlier renditions of "Timid Creature". Below are five different versions of the song presented it from it's infancy to it's final state.

v 5.0 - Final Found on "Out of Orbit"
The final version of the song wound up being what I referred to as 'The Monster' when it came time to mixing the album. It was so ambitious in it's scope, that I felt very overwhelmed at times when trying to pull it all together. The song passes back and forth between so many live and sequenced elements during it's five and a half minute journey, that it demanded we attended to it nearly every mix session. The challenges involved; pulsating sequenced rhythms to be matched with real drums, synth bass on the verses changing over to live bass on the chorus, keyboard atmospheres galore, Chavo's guitars, plus my wall of vocals passes, each with their own individual effects. Ultimately, in the end I'm pleased with the result, but NEVER, NEVER, NEVER AGAIN!

v 4.0 - Album Demo of "Timid Creature"
This version represents all my original sequenced parts that were presented to the band for guitar, bass, drums, etc. The vocals were all done in my upstairs bathroom which I converted into a vocal booth for about three months. Other than the obvious alteration of live elements, the biggest thing I changed before the final mix was the sequenced vibraphone part. I felt it was to melodic once Chavo placed his guitars in the mix, so I changed the sound to more of a driving pulse. Also thinned my effects out the break for his guitar solo.

v 3.0 - Earlier Studio Demo
This version is from a project I created with my good friend Greg who played viola and sang backing vocals. We took four songs into the studio recording on 16 tracks with my trusty Mac running what I sequenced at home. We worked under the name "What Noise" which was inspired by one of my favorite 80's bands "Kissing the Pink", though this project never went beyond our demo. I decided to drop the lyrics in the break for the Alphanaut version "Sometimes you're a villan / sometimes your no more / sometimes you're a virgin / sometimes your a whore / sometimes I love you / Sometimes I hate you / but I just can't seem to like you any more". Just wasn't that angry about it these days.

v 2.0 - Early 4 Track Home Recording
This is a slight alteration to what wound up in the studio and was recorded in my living room several months earlier. The main difference here is my friend Janet is on guitar, bass and backing vocal with Greg again on viola. The three of us had been talking about starting a band together but ultimately the timing didn't work for Janet. However a year later Janet and I connected again and formed our band "November".

v 1.0 - First Instrumental Sketch
Here is a short instrumental sketch with me playing around with the song. Very humble beginnings.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Just searching around Youtube for clips of some of the films I mentioned in my previous post on the visual universe of Alphanaut. I found a trailer for a restored version of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" which has been colorized accompanied by the music from "In the Hall of the Mountain King". I love the set pieces with their forced use of perspective and skewed angles.

Again, this movie doesn't directly relate to the art direction I was going for with "Out of Orbit". Just thought it would be cool to share.

I also ran across a trailer for a modernized retelling of the Caligari directed by David Lee Fisher. The 2005 movie incorporates scenes voiced by current actors and shot against green screen which are then composited into the original footage. I vaguely remember hearing about this project years ago though I don't no if it ever made it to the theaters here in Los Angeles.

I put this version in my Netflix que and I'll have to see how the experiment worked.

From Desktop To Studio - The Process of Recording "Out of Orbit"

My humble studio at home - controller keyboard and my Mac.

This post may have limited appeal, but I figured there might be other digital composers who'd be curious about my song writing process.

Nearly every tune I wrote for "Out of Orbit" started it's life in a program called Reason by Propellerheads. For me it's a perfect place to start because of the incredible flexibility of their sound modules, and the ease of use for those who want to reprogram and create your own sonic palate. Just before entering the studio last year I upgraded to Reason 4 which includes the amazing "Thor" module. Once I heard this baby, and all it could do, I reexamined all the songs and set out to craft a whole new group of sounds inside this unit.

Once I've gotten my song structure together and I'm happy with what developed in Reason, I then export each track as separate audio files. I'll also export a midi file then take everything into Logic Pro 8. In Logic I import each wave file to their own track, also bringing in the midi data so I can further experiment with the parts to see if the program might have something unexpected to offer. For me, I find that Logic is great for some types of sounds but not others. By the time I've reworked each song, about a third of what I created in Reason gets stripped away and replaced. I then head into my humble home vocal booth (ie. the upstairs bathroom), and lay down my scratch lead and backing tracks for studio reference.

One song on the album was an exception to this process. "Satellites Crashing" actually developed completely in Logic after I discovered the Sculpture module inside the program. I'm really intrigued by what can be crafted with this device and am experimenting with it more for the next album.

After all my editing is done I pass the tunes on to my engineer Ted Scarlett who imports everything to Pro Tools. He then has the task of setting up some preliminary EQs and FX before we head to the studio.

To get that wide vintage sound I wanted for "Out of Orbit" Ted and I tried to record as much analog data as we could through the mixing board at Stagg Street Studios. All the drums, bass, half the guitars, vocals and all the other instruments, got sweetened by the studio's outboard gear before heading into Pro Tools.

Once everything was recorded we spend a couple months editing and then headed to Farias Studios for our mix session. Their Neve VR-60 board was the best one near me that was also in my budget. Both the studio's Neve and Manley Vari-Mu gave us the right combination of bigness and punch that I was looking for.

Thought I'd give some insight to the songs that directly inspired me when recording the "Out of Orbit" album.

Ultimately, there is an endless list of tunes that has captivated me over the years. My tastes are pretty eclectic, and a broad palate of sounds inspire me when creating music. However, when it came time to aim for a sound for "Out of Orbit" I knew I wanted it to have a certain vintage quality with a large scope. The drive as for this album to have as much in common with current electronica as it did with my art-rock heroes from the late 70's eary 80's.

"Six Degrees" of American Idol

Okay, so this blog post is just lateral (and very shameless) self promotion, and a bit of (probably needless) info for the Alphanaut trivia files. So we how to Alphanaut and tonight's episode of American Idol connect in the concept of 'Six Degrees"? Well, I co-own a company called LA Outback that imports didgeridoos from Australia for resale into the US. DIDG-ER-I-WHAT? The didgeridoo, for those not in the know, is a musical instrument native to the Australian Aborigines.

The music director for American Idol came by and purchased two didgeridoos last week for tonight's show. We didn't know which contestant was going to get the didge as part of their back up music and were stoked when we found out that it was Crystal Bowersox.

Design Inspiration For Alphanaut From Vintage Science Fiction

I wanted to further expand on the topic of the Sci-Fi imagery that inspired the current look of the Alphanaut universe.

I've always been a big fan of vintage Film Noir and Expressionist Cinema with their low key black and white visual styles. Two silent films by Fritz Lang, "Metropolis" and "M", made a huge impact on me when I first saw them. These movies are always in the back of my mind when thinking about Alphanaut's art direction, especially "Metropolis" with it's message about social class divisions. Also really love Robert Wiene's "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" for it's truly bizzarre sets, even though this movie doesn't directly apply to the inspiration for Alphanaut.

In the mid 90's I played a computer game called "Gadget", and even though it wasn't much of a game per se, I was captivated by the surreal landscape created by Japanese computer artist Haruhiko Shono. Aside from the game, there was a visual novel "Inside Out with Gadget" and DVD called "Gadget Trips: Mindscapes" which when combined, revealed the entire story of the universe created by Haruhiko. I pursued and purchased all three, absorbing the material, but still felt ultimately 'left out' of the big picture. But it didn't really matter. I mostly was just inspiration by the unique world which combined art deco elements in it's futurist vision.

Years later I rented a movie called "Casshern" and a quarter of the way through I was like "This reminds me of Gadget". I got up and and quickly dug through IMDB and discovered there was a reason. Haruhiko oversaw the concept design and computer graphic of the film giving it his unique style. Ultimately the film doesn't quite reach the goal of it's ambitions, but it's incredible to watch and worth a rent if you love the genre.

Lastly, I certainly would have to credit Buckminster Fuller for his unique futurist architecture which was truly revolutionary and ahead of it's time.

"Never Been To Athens" Review, from Griffon Spire Magazine

The first single from "Out of Orbit", “Never Been to Athens” is a figurehead for the whole CD. This is a song that will stimulate body to move in the clubs but the melody will linger for days after. The EP-Single has two additional versions of “Athens” as well as the album version. The “Planet Nibiru Remix" was remixed by Mark Alan, which sounds like he traveled to rain forest recorded the environment to splice into a minimalist interpretation of the song. It works to cool effect. The “It's Gonna Crash Remix" was remixed by co-producer Ted Scarlett and aims directly at the dance floor with a retro house vibe. The “B” Side of the single, “AL 424-15” is one of the best flip sides I've heard in a while. Spoiling it for you would be unjust, but let me say the theme is post-apocalyptic and a very strange tale indeed. It's a pity the tune is not on the album, but that is why I love CD singles.

The Brother's Quay and the Seed of Inspiration

I thought I'd share this clip of the Brother's Quay called "Street of Crocodiles" mainly because of what these two have always inspired in me. Stephen and Timothy Quay are identical twins originally from Pennsylvania, but moved to England to study and create their stop motion films. I caught this piece at an animation festival back in the mid 80's and was hypnotized from the first frame. Never had I seen anything like it at the time and those images stuck in my mind for years. I was lucky enough to find their work on DVD several years ago, and highly recommend you grab a copy if it's still to be had. There are some amazing pieces included on the disc.

Unfortunately this is just a small segment and I believe the complete work runs around 12 minutes. However, it does give you a nice taste of their genius and you can see where Tim Burton and others got their inspiration.

The Visual Universe of Alphanaut

I've been asked how I chose the current visuals to represent the Alphanaut universe. Why venture so far back in time when a more obvious choice may have been to tap into 70's sci-fi kitsch. Initially, I did envision very stark art direction, say in the tone of the film "THX 1138" with a very minimal and suppressed color palate. But as the album's sound developed, that visual style just didn't seem appropriate. Having already hinted at a 'pseudo Jules Verne' vibe with "The Lunar Age", I thought why not continue in that direction, expanding the concept further.

Ultimately what I decided to invoke was that period in time before man rocketed off the planet, before the 50's vision of a sanitized future when our concepts for what might were still naiev. I couldn't be too steam punk or early Buck Rogers either. I knew the most obvious person to help me pull this off was Jimmy Ahlander, the visionary artist behind the "Never Been To Athens" video.

Jimmy and I first tackled concepts for the main album cover and three potential singles. At the same time I had been lucky enough to find Andrew Fogel, a local prop maker, while searching around Craigslist. Andrew specializes in vintage sci-fi props from the era we were aiming to emulate, and had some great gear. For the singles we decided to make the props our main subjects, including a dented bucket helmet, jetpack, welding goggles and a pair of little aluminum robots I own. For the day of the shoot Nils Timm, the director of the "Spontaneity" video, Jimmy and me went on location in the hills above Malibu.

The concept for the "Out of Orbit" cover originally was to be set in the desert. Jimmy had drawn a massive letter 'A' floating ominously in the sky with a huge shadow cast on a lone figure standing small in the distance. Simply due to the lack of time with my printing deadline, we were forced to shoot at our existing location.

To say that particular December day was cold would be an understatement. We had just had a massive storm front pass through the days prior and we were lucky to have even a hint of sun. The early evening temps dropped into the mid 40's in the hills and none of us really prepared for extreme weather. My "THX 1138" concept did carry over for the album cover with my wardrobe which was nothing more than yoga pants, a flimsy shirt and my cap. I insisted on being barefoot for the photos to give a sense of vulnerability, and my feet were nearly numb after standing on that rock for an hour. The crazy thing is all that suffering was for not as you really can't tell I'm barefoot on the cover.

With the Alphanaut website www.planetalphanaut.com , we decided to make our robot couple, (I call then Ru-B and Clank) the main subjects. Jimmy and I came up with the idea of creating images that would represent a scrapbook of the duo taken after crash landing on our version of 1940's Earth. Each page on the site depicts a key moment in their confusing journey.

Thanks again to Jimmy and Nils, I really owe a lot to you guys for helping me solidify my vision for Alphanaut.

Alphanaut on "Stag Night" Soundtrack

Just received all the legal paperwork for the inclusion of Alphanaut's "Don't Hide Away From The Sun" on the "Stag Night" soundtrack. The is the first official licensing opportunity for me, placing the tune at in the closing credits of the movie, which I'm pretty thrilled about. Can't wait to get a copy of the DVD to revel a bit at home.

The film was directed by Peter A Dowling, who wrote the film "Flight Plan" (with Jodie Foster), and stars Kip Pardue, Breckin Meyer, Vinessa Shaw and Rachel Oliva.

Thought I'd celebrate by posting some info on the film.

Probing Alphnaut's "Out of Orbit"

Having already tracked the entire album and begun the process of pre-mix editing, I still didn't have a name for this collection of songs. I really wanted the name to somehow tie into "The Lunar Age", the previous EP, as the songs were all related to one another, considering they had been written at the same time. I also wanted the new name to evoke a certain sense of forward momentum, reaching outward into the unknown.

Panic began to set in as January 2010 rapidly approached, the month I had committed to passing the album over to Rhonda my PR gal. It was fall 2009 and I still had zip. Then during my first interview, set up with a freelance writer to establish my bio, serendipity struck once again. We were on the topic of the inspiration for the name Alphanaut and he had read on my Myspace page that it was loosely inspired by Space 1999. During our phone conversation he went to Wikipedia, typed in the show and began to read a loud what had been entered.

"Space: 1999 is a British science-fiction television series that ran from 1975-77. In the pilot, nuclear waste from Earth stored on the moon explodes in a catastrophic accident on 13 September 1999, knocking the moon out of its orbit and sending it and the 311 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha hurtling uncontrollably into outer space."

When he said the words "out of it's orbit", I nearly stopped him mid-sentence. "Out of Orbit", I thought to myself, that's it! After the conversation I dashed to my computer to visit the Wikipedia entry, then listened to the songs. It seemed an obvious fit so "Out of Orbit" it was.

In the end the name wound up having more than surface relevance to me, both internally and externally. Externally, a couple songs on the album were inspired by social issues including the current global melt down, political and social divisions and religious tensions. Like everyone else, I've had my share of angst during all this craziness, and "Out of Orbit" seemed an appropriate name to reflect the current state of affairs.

Internally, I was going through my own personal turmoils. My dog Dingo's struggle with cancer, and ultimate passing during the mixing sessions, left me shattered. The very process of recording took me away from responsibilities at home and work, making things extremely stressful. Complications from surgery a year earlier coming back to haunt me, leaving me incapacitated at times. Countless things taxed me from every angle and I thought the project might never finish. Once again "Out of Orbit" seemed to sum it all up.

Now that this project has been released from my personal sphere and traveled into the real world, it's amazing how all the angst and pain that filled me during the recording process seems to have ebbed. There was certainly catharsis with "Out of Orbit", which I didn't anticipate when I first tooled the songs in 2008, though now I feel I can comfortably move forward.

As an unexpected side effect of it all, I was inspired to write a handful of new songs, which I hope will make it to the next release.

Alphanaut - An Introduction

Alphanaut. What is it? Who's behind it and where is it going?

So, I've been encouraged by someone with a bit more wisdom than I, that it's time to start shedding some light on Alphanaut as a musical entity, slowly opening up to what's behind it all. Expose my inner bits and reveal what motivates me as an artist. All those things that both impassion and enrage me, permanently splattering it across the web for all to see. Heavy stuff, right? All this certainly sounds exciting, so why do I find it so hard to get the ball rolling? Give me a moment while I muse a bit more over my cup of iced mocha (soy, no sugar please).

Mmmm... coffee! Okay, so perhaps 8 AM isn't the best time to tackle such a serious task, but it's all I've got before the onslaught of my day begins. So here goes.

Alphanaut came to life in 2007 after taking a lengthy break from song writing (stop me if this gets redundant to some of you as I know this info has already been covered a few places online). I had been writing songs since my junior year in high school and recorded my first four-song demo at 18 (God forbid those songs ever surface). I hopped from band to band post high school, before moving to Los Angeles at the tender age of 21 to join the 'perfect band'. Initially Los Angeles wound up being less than what I imagined. Trying to find the right project in the land of 'clone bands' was next to impossible, so I ultimately I decided to start my own project. That band was called November, which I fronted for nearly 8 years. November went through numerous incarnations during its lifetime as band members came and went, including my original song writing partner. In the end it was my own self-imposed pressure to 'make it big' that caused me to take a break from the project. My hiatus was intended to be brief, though it turned into a permanent separation. Frustrated by the flannel inspired music scene of the 90's, my creative mojo exhausted, I was just plain depressed that I hadn't made a dent yet. All the usual emotional burdens felt by a young musician trying to find their way.

When I began song writing again I decided I was just going to do it for myself this time and create a project without the stresses of a organizing a permanent band. I'd write the songs and hopefully collaborate with other artists that inspired me creatively, ultimately forming a musical universe where the cast of characters might come and go. This vision moved a step closer to reality once my friend Jorge Villanueva heard my demos and really pushed me to take what I was doing seriously. He introduced me to his brother Chavo Villanueva, master of guitar and bass, and immediately I could tell there was a musical connection I was hoping for. The two brothers have been the core of my creative support team since day one, and I owe a lot to them for bringing added dimension to my original concepts.

A lot of people ask me about the name Alphanaut. First off, it's never been intended as a proper noun to identify me, Mark Alan (a la, Moby, Prince, Madonna, Cher, etc.). I am not Alphanut, but rather the ring leader of this virtual musical collective, guiding it on its journey. The name actually came quite by accident. I struggled a long time, as every band surely does, trying to find the right fit. I knew I wanted a single word name for the project, and was also aware of an unintended sci-fi vibe that was developing in the sound. For months and months names came and went, ultimately nothing sticking. But then one day, for no real reason, the 70's TV show "Space 1999" popped into my head. Loved that show as a kid and remembered 'Moon Base Alpha' and its inhabitants. For a split second I thought to myself "Those people could have been called Alphanauts" (though they never were). LIGHTBULB FLASHED... TIME STOPPED... MUSIC CUED FROM ON HIGH.... I had my name - Alphanaut!

So, that's basically it, my intro to Alphanaut. Not too difficult thus far.

The Armature of Alphanaut - "Out of Orbit" Review by Salvatore L. Frascone

Some of you may be aware that for a mere $200,000, you can board a flight on Virgin Galactic to be in orbit for 4 minutes. Even if I had the money, I just would not do it. Reducing my bone density is not on my list of things to do. May I make a more practical, suggestion to you. Buy Alphanaut CD "Out of Orbit". The brainchild of seasoned music mastermind Mark Alan. He left Seattle and went to LA, to terriform music project Alphanaut. There is a science-fiction vibe which is outstanding. This is jazz-pop-rock FROM OUTER SPACE. I mean GOOD JAZZ, not that smooth mind numbing variety.

"Out of Orbit" is a 45 minute music excursion to some other far off place, another planet, in the future where musical boundaries don't exist. If you said Alphanaut was of this earth, I would say , “not true” and for less than $10 you purchase a ticket for this remarkable journey. Tracks contain elements of vintage 70's art-rock, neo-jazz, new wave, Latin rhythms and pop with vocals layered over the nebulous backdrop. Singer Mark Alan sounds different than anyone else I have ever heard, at times suggesting the likes of Bowie, Roger Waters, and Mark Griffin of MC 900 Ft. Jesus. He delivers a blend of singing and spoken words all at one, his lyrics are thought provoking and compelling with topics everyone can relate to. Sometimes personal and other times looking outward, Alan deals with our daily “what ifs”, worries, and hopes, with an eye on optomism.

With a heavy electronic edge, Alan teamed up with seasoned guest musicians like co-producer Ted Scarlett on guitar, Jorge Villanueva on drums, William Bing on trumpet, and Chavo Villanueva on guitar, bass and ebo. Mark did a lot of custom sound designing for this album with 'ear candy' meticulously crafted on his computer.

Track nine from the album, titled “Don't Hide Away from the Sun”, can also be found on the "Stag Night" Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The film was a hit at a recent European film festival and should hit on this side of the pond by summer 2010. Before this news was announced, I was saying to myself, “Alphanaut should be doing film music”, and now it is so. I'm eager to hear “Don't Hide Away from the Sun”, an anthem for conquering depression, in relation to the soundtrack. I am at a loss for words to describe the song, but if you've heard the music of Bee Bop Deluxe founder Bill Nelson, his album "Map of Dreams" would give you a vague idea.

Fine Tuning Alphanaut "Out of Orbit" B-Sides

Well I'm back at my trusty Mac and keyboard this weekend, sleeves rolled up and fingers ready to fine-tune the songs I have worked out as extra cuts for the upcoming singles. One bonus tune, an instrumental titled "Night Blind", is already 'in the can' which was recorded and mastered during the "Out of Orbit" sessions. Since it's ready to go, it will more than likely wind up on the next, yet to be determined, single.

The new songs nearing completion are "Sleep Spun Brown" which was co-written with my ex band mate and good friend Cobban Barnett. It's a sparse, piano driven piece that was originally created for a project we were working on together, but we both agreed it fit so well into the Alphanaut universe that it moved over to my sessions. Next is "Look To The Future" (temporary title - may or not stay) which is envisioned as a follow up to the themes set out on "Timid Creature" the first track from "Out of Orbit". "Timid Creature" was always intended as a two part story, to be expressed in a pair of songs sharing a similar melodic theme. The first as a confession of psychological boundaries, self imposed by the inexperience of youth, and the second, a story of personal restraints broken through the strength of adulthood. I originally wanted "Look To The Future" to close the album, but unfortunately it just didn't come together they way I wanted in time to make it into the studio. So I figured it would be released as the final cut from these sessions on the last single, wrapping up the whole collective.

I'm also teaming up with Larry Kutcher, my pianist from the "Out of Orbit" sessions, to work on a piano and vocal version of "More Than I Do". We had spontaneously created this alternate approach to the song while taking a break in the recording sessions, and I'm really eager to track this stripped down interpretation and get it out to the world. Not sure how it will make it's debut, but stay tuned.

"Don't Hide Away From The Sun" Featured on "Stag Night" Soundtrack

This is pretty cool news, Alphanaut has a song "Don't Hide Away From The Sun", from "Out of Orbit" which has been used in the closing credits of the movie "Stag Night" which is set for release mid to late 2010.

"Stag Night" is a gritty horror film is set in the New York subway system and is currently being screened in Europe. The film is directed by Peter Dowling who wrote "Flight Plan" starring Jodie Foster, in his directorial debut. The film also stars on of my favorite actors Breckin Meyer which makes the news doubly cool news to me!

Keep a look out for the film when it's released and stick around to the end to hear my tune!

"Out of Orbit" Gets It's First Online Review

This is a very exciting moment for me, and one I've been waiting a while for. Got my first album review for the Alphanaut album "Out of Orbit", courtesy of James McQuiston at www.neufutur.com. James gives the album an 8.6 out of 10 which I'm doubly thrilled about.

"Jennifer" single by Alphanaut - Reviewed by Connexion Bizarre

Alphanaut receives a review on the single "Jennifer" by the music blog Connexion Bizarre.

This EP features Alphanaut's "Her Eleven Eyes" and various versions of "Jennifer". The overall sound of the EP is what I would categorize as alternative ambient.

Firstly we have the "Universal Expansion" version of "Jennifer", a nicely done long running tune with relaxing background atmosphere setting up Alphanaut's story of "Jennifer". Midway through the song the strings take over and add a touch of drama to the song. Also on the EP is a short edit of "Universal Expansion" mix, a condensed version of the song. Next up is the "EP Version" which is a more stripped down version of the tune, followed by the final version of "Jennifer", the "Alternate Ebo Version" which has a great deal of character. The backing electric guitar fits the mood of the song much better. As well as the ending of it gets some acoustic guitar treatment backed by subtle stings.

Finally we have "Her Eleven Eyes" which has more of an experimental feel to it and is very minimal in its instrument use, it defiantly ads a bit of a twist to the overall mood of this release.

Never Been To Athens - US Music Video Campaign

I've been working with Andy Gesner over at HIP Video Promo on a campaign for the "Never Been To Athens" and "Spontaneity" music videos. Andy has been incredibly supportive of Alphanaut and his enthusiasm for these two visual pieces has really been incredible. The campaign will launch March 1st and will target mainstream video markets like MTV, VH1, Fuel, Logo, etc., as well as online and club promotions. So keep a look out for these two clips in March and April 2010.

Begin with Ahlander's interstellar clip for "Never Been To Athens". Here, our animated space traveler rides through the stars in a vegetable, lands on shifting desert planets, and drifts past televisions embedded in asteroids. It's suffused with a sense of sadness and dreams unrealized: the astronaut has touched the sky, but his sad eyes reveal that he's missing something he'll likely never find. Most of the video is constructed from sliding two-dimensional solids and cut-outs, which gives this expansive universe a curious feeling of flatness and disorientation. It's a fascinating ride, and one that ends in disappointment for the poor main character, but in revelation for the viewer.

Much is revealed at the end of Nils Timm's clip for "Spontaneity", too. Here, the walking ghost is the creative spirit of an ordinary woman desperate (perhaps unconsciously) for escape from the mundane. The phantom wanders through hip clubs and busy avenues, unable to quench her desire. As in the "Athens" clip, the feeling of destabilization is generated by the director's technique -- here, thousands of still frames are stitched into a sequence that feels superficially logical, but is hardly uninterrupted. Motion is irregular, choppy, trippy; the ghost's tentative walk is more than occasionally terrifying. It's another thrill ride from a maker of dreams -- messages from the mind of a true musical visionary.

Alphanaut Autographed CD Giveaway

I've got an idea for my first giveaway!

I've been fortunate enough to secure me a spot in a nationwide, in theater pre-show entertainment campaign for AMC, Regal, Edwards and Lowes cinemas. In February and March 2010, my single "Never Been To Athens" (available Feb 16th), is being played in lobbies and theaters as part of the recorded entertainment. Couldn't be more stoked about this, and I am extremely gracious for this opportunity.

I thought it would be cool is if I could create a fun contest around this and give away free merch to fans and friends. Here's my idea... If you have a phone or handheld with the capacity to capture video, and just so happen to be present when "Never Been To Athens" plays, simply record some footage with the song playing in the background for me to post on my Youtube site. Never Been To Athens - Animated Music Video

"Never Been To Athens" is the first single from the full-length Alphanaut album "Out of Orbit" and here is the music video for the tune. Mark Alan again teamed up with Jimmy Ahlander to create the visual piece for his song, which focuses on the story of a lone astronaut flying around a surreal animated world in his spaceship made from a potato.

Alphanaut Spontaneity Music Video

The debut video by Alphanaut "Spontaneity" from "The Lunar Age" EP is a story of the creative spirit separated from the body, struggling to reconnect. Nils Timm directed the song by Mark Alan and stars Claire Falconer as the nude disembodied specter.

Most of this video was shot using two digital still cameras to create over 40,000 photos which were stitched together to create the moving image.

Alphanaut is still in its infancy as an entity, developing after some time away from song writing as I focused on other creative endeavors. After completing my first EP, The Lunar Age, it’s subsequent singles, music videos and now wrapping up a new full length, I figured it was time to start putting the material out there to get professional feedback. I knew the IMAs would be a great place to start and I’m excited by the opportunity to have my material in front of so many talented people in the industry.

I’M PROUD TO BE AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST BECAUSE:
It allows me to express my musical and visual ideas without compromise, second-guesses or edits to please someone above me holding the ‘financial strings’. Being an artist who’s always been very influenced by those who create “outside of the box,” it’s been an exciting process developing Alphanaut my own way.

WHAT’S NEXT:
Alphanaut will be releasing its first full-length album in March 2010 titled Out of Orbit. With the exception of two pieces, these are all songs that were written around the same time as those from The Lunar Age EP. However for the full length, I knew I wanted a much more ‘live’ feel so I chose the ten songs that would best benefit from the inclusion of a full band mixed in with my sequenced parts. I’m very pleased with how the sound is evolving.

There will probably be a tour in 2010 as well. I’ve been talking about it with the musicians who contributed to the album and all are eager to help me take the sound and put it in front of a crowd.

SUCCESS = First: The satisfaction resulting from taking a song from a small spark of an idea to its final form. Second: Putting my music out there and getting fan feedback at a grassroots level. Third: Making a little cash to keep Alphanaut moving forward.

WHAT MAKES MY PROJECT STAND OUT:
I like combining Electronica with other genres like Flamenco, Funk, World Beat and Jazz, paying homage to sounds of the past while keeping my feet planted in a today’s modern sound. For those who care to listen more closely, the upcoming album will have a lot of social commentary represented in the songs. But ultimately my focus is trying to create strong catchy melodies to back up the lyrics.

MY FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY:
Many of my favorite venues I played in aren’t around any more. I always enjoyed playing on a stage like at the Roxy in Los Angeles where you have enough room for everyone to move around. For Alphanaut I envision a strong visual element to the live experience so venues that can support that concept will be important.
